The China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA), entered into force on 20 December 2015, improving Australia’s access to their largest trading partner.
ChAFTA increases opportunities by eliminating tariffs on the vast majority of trade in goods between Australia and China. This benefits Australian businesses that export Australian goods to China or import Chinese goods for sale in Australia. The agreement paves ways for the next phase of Australia’s economic relationship with China.
Australia is one of only a handful of developed countries to conclude a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China, giving Australian businesses a competitive advantage.
If you are an importer, exporter or producer, understanding more about ChAFTA will help you get the most out of our free trade agreement with China. In order to benefit from the ChAFTA, Australian companies need to satisfy a number of documentation requirements.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has created a guide to using ChAFTA to export and import.
Australia’s top industries to benefit from ChAFTA are:
In 2016 over 85% of Australia’s goods exports to China entered duty free, this will rise to 93% after four years and 95% when ChAFTA is fully implemented.
